Images of people are inherently interesting. But what makes one painting compelling and another something that you pass by? In this six-week painting class, we will focus on composition as a way of placing a figure on a canvas to be interesting and impactful. We will use old master paintings as our jumping-off point to explore options for approaching a blank canvas to make for personally meaningful paintings. Students will go through a series of exercises exploring the figure’s relationship to its surroundings through use of line, shape, color, and scale. At least two sessions will be spent on developing a painting of your choice using elements from previous exercises.
